Knott Family of Granville County NCOnline sources trace this family back to James Knott and Mary Holladay of Nansemond Co. VA. Details are scant for earlier generations - does anyone have good information?
First GenerationJames Knott, son of James and Mary, was born about 1721 in Nansemond County and died in 1783 in Granville Co. NC. I don't know his wife's name yet.
Second GenerationJames Knott had a son John, born about 1740 and died in 1799, who married Mary Forsythe. I have very little information on them.
Third GenerationThe next James, son of John and Mary, was born about 1762 in Granville County, and is said to have died in Caswell County NC about 1820. His wife was Sallie Brassfield, and we follow here their son Caleb Knott, born about 1795, who married Elizabeth Tucker in 1923.
Fourth GenerationChildren of Caleb Knott and Elizabeth TuckerAnn Eliza Knott (ca. 1826-?) George Knott (1830-1860) m. Rebecca Hobgood (1837-1873), d/o Joseph Dennis Hobgood and Nancy Blalock. Mary Knott (ca. 1833-?) Elizabeth Knott (ca. 1836-?) Caleb Knott (ca. 1835-?) James Knott (ca. 1842-?) Julia Ann Knott (ca. 1846-? Benjamin Knott (ca. 1848-?) This list is based on the 1850 census. In 1860 Elizabeth was head of household, with most of the children still at home. In 1870 Elizabeth was living with her son James and his family. The youngest children Julia and Benjamin were with them, as was Ella Nancy, George's daughter (see Fifth Generation).
Fifth GenerationChildren of George Knott and Rebecca HobgoodElla Nancy Knott (1858-1905) m. Amos Dean (1852-1930) As indicated above, Ella Nancy was living with her uncle and grandmother in 1870. Rebecca is said to have lived until 1873, but I haven't identified her in the census. I have no evidence that George and Rebecca had other children.
